Warriors Stephen Curry may want to rescind the prediction he made before Nets game

Immediately prior to his team’s 125-99 shellacking at the hands of the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday night, Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry made a prediction for the season.

During a pregame interview with TNT’s “Inside the NBA” crew, Curry was asked by Shaquille O’Neal to reveal the “true expectations” for the 2020-2021 Warriors, given the loss of Klay Thompson and a reliance on young players such as rookie No. 2 pick James Wiseman.

“We know what the experts are saying and where people kind of see us in the Western Conference,” Curry said of algorithms and anonymous executives alike who’ve forecasted another playoff-less season for his team. “For us it’s gotta be a situation no matter how the season starts to understand we’re gonna get better every single game, every single week. We obviously want to be a playoff team, and once we get in there, we know we’ll be a tough out.”

He added, “We feel like we’re a playoff team, we’re gonna get there, and this is going to be a fun 72-game journey.”

Needless to say, those who are predicting the Warriors will miss the playoffs for a second-straight season surely felt a bit vindicated on Tuesday night. Andrew Wiggins was very bad, with Google users apparently taking notice, and the team’s bench appears to be conspicuously thin.

One probably shouldn’t expect Curry to say anything other than “we expect to be a playoff team,” and it’s just one one game, but still — the Dubs’ lackluster performance in the minutes after the interview with Shaq was jarring.

To be fair to Curry, Golden State was missing its best defender in Draymond Green. Curry is also right to note that the team is young and expected to improve as the season goes along. But his conculsion that the current roster will improve enough to be a “tough out” in the playoffs looks as precarious as Wiggins’ jumpshot.
