Warriors-76ers: Steph Curry gets MVP chants on Joel Embiid’s home floor after dropping 49 points
Steph #Steph
Steph Curry made just two mistakes on Monday night against the Philadelphia 76ers: He committed too many turnovers (six) and he picked Skittles as his preferred candy over M&M’s (objectively incorrect).
Everything else about Curry’s performance was impeccable. He scored 49 points, including 10 3-pointers, in a 107-96 win that got the Dubs back to .500 on the season. He’s averaging 40 points for the month of April, something that’s been done over a full month by just four other players ever, and he’s overtaken Washington Wizards guard Bradley Beal as the NBA’s scoring leader.
Naturally, when you pull off those feats, you’re going to launch yourself straight into the most valuable player discussion. And even in Philadelphia, where fellow MVP candidate Joel Embiid resides, Curry got some MVP chants when he made his way to the free throw line late in the fourth quarter.
Now, in fairness, the chants were almost certainly coming from Dubs fans in the house, and they were not overwhelming — Wells Fargo Center can only hold a fraction of its maximum capacity due to COVID-19 protocols. But it was still jarring to hear fans chanting anything at this point in the pandemic, let alone cheering for the star player of the visiting team.
Thanks to Curry’s supernova efforts, the Warriors are 6-2 over their last eight games and are just two games back of the No. 7 seed, the Dallas Mavericks, in the Western Conference. If Curry keeps dropping 40-pieces, he might actually have a real shot at the league’s top individual award. Magic Johnson, just like the Warriors fans in Philadelphia, has already talked himself into it.
