‘Wants To Destroy Hawthorn’ – Hawks Fans Fume As Clarkson Set To Depart

Clarkson #Clarkson

Hawthorn fans have reacted angrily after reports emerged that four-time premiership coach Alastair Clarkson would not be continuing at the club in 2022.

The Age reported – via Caroline Wilson – that Clarkson will end his 16-year tenure with the club before the end of his contract – which expires at the end of next campaign.

Earlier this month, the Hawks – led by president Jeff Kennett – announced a succession plan which would see club legend Sam Mitchell take over as coach from Clarkson at the conclusion of next season.

Veteran journalist Wilson suggested both Clarkson and Mitchell weren’t happy with the terms of the agreement – and it was likely the senior coach would depart before the handover of roles.

Mitchell and Clarkson both denied any issue with the plan to various media outlets but the story continued to bubble along until the shock departure of Clarkson was revealed.

The Age reports the decision came following meetings this week involving CEO Justin Reeves and football director Richie Vandenberg, as well as members of the senior leadership group, who communicated the situation wasn’t working.

As one of the most influential people in the club’s history, Clarkson’s unceremonious exit is sparking a fierce backlash from many fans, much of it aimed at Hawks president Jeff Kennett, having been one of the main drivers behind the succession plan.

Hawthorn are set to take on Brisbane at the University of Tasmania on Sunday, but it remains to be seen whether Clarkson will coach in that match – or remain in charge for their final four games of 2021.
