Virtual town hall discusses options for residents at risk of eviction due to pandemic

Town Hall #TownHall

SPRINGFIELD – The coronavirus pandemic has had devastating effects on people around the world with many people becoming ill, losing their jobs and often times their homes.

Way Finders in partnership with the state Department of Housing and Community Development will host a virtual Town Hall this afternoon to discuss options available to residents who are at risk of being evicted or are in the process of being evicted.

The Town Hall will be held from 1-2 p.m. and will be streamed on Way Finders Facebook page.

Springfield officials, legal and community advocates will discuss housing issues residents and landlords continue to face as a result of financial difficulties due to the pandemic.

“There are new state and federal resources available to renters and it is critical that our residents and landlords are not only aware of government programs but know their legal rights, how to apply for assistance and access rent relief,” said Desi Jackson, a local community organizer.

Springfield is one of the hardest-hit cities in the state, where the largest number of total evictions were filed in earlier this year after a state moratorium on evictions expired. Evictions across the state have spiked in low-income cities like Fall River, New Bedford and Worcester, Jackson said.

Speakers will include:

  • Jane Edmonstone – Senior Supervising Attorney, housing unit, Community Legal Aid, representing Covid Eviction Legal Help Project
  • Noah Barnes – Dispute Resolutions Center Case Coordinator, Berkshire County Regional Housing Authority
  • Millie Colon – Housing Services Manager with Way Finders
  • The event will include an opportunity for questions. Those wanting to watch the event on Zoom can register here.
