In a historic showdown at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, the 2023 World Cup semi-final between India and New Zealand unfolded as a momentous chapter in cricketing history. The 35-year-old batting maestro, Virat Kohli, etched his name into the annals of the sport by achieving a monumental feat – scoring his 50th ODI century and surpassing the iconic Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most centuries in the format.

Sachin Tendulkar, present in the stands at his home ground, witnessed the momentous occasion and could be seen applauding the remarkable achievement. Adding a touching dimension to this historic moment, Kohli’s gesture towards Tendulkar was profound – the former Indian captain bowed down to the cricketing legend, showcasing immense respect and admiration.

As Virat Kohli notched his 50th ODI hundred, his wife, Anushka Sharma, once again demonstrated her unwavering support and enthusiasm. The actress was seen blowing flying kisses and cheering vociferously as Kohli reached his century, highlighting the emotional and celebratory atmosphere at Wankhede Stadium.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Team India unfolded a formidable performance. Skipper Rohit Sharma continued his stellar form, delivering an aggressive knock of 47 in just 29 balls. Shubman Gill showcased a fine touch, scoring 79 in 65 balls before having to retire hurt due to cramps.

Unfazed by Gill’s departure, Kohli maintained the momentum, crafting a remarkable innings. Accumulating 117 runs in 113 balls, he steered India toward a potentially massive score nearing the 400-run mark. Kohli partnered with Shreyas Iyer, and together, they orchestrated a 163-run partnership. Iyer, too, played a stunning knock, contributing significantly to the team’s total.

Kohli’s journey to the record books included equalling Sachin’s tally of 49 ODI centuries in a league stage game against South Africa in Kolkata on his birthday (November 5). Expressing his admiration for Tendulkar after that game, Kohli acknowledged that he could never be as good as the cricketing legend.
