Viewers could not help but joke about Martin Tyler’s reaction to Liverpool’s goal vs Southampton, with one describing it as if he was “commentating a funeral”.

Liverpool have travelled down to the south coast to take on Southampton at St Mary’s knowing that they are in dire need of a win or the Premier League title is out of the window. Manchester City are on the cusp of landing a fourth league title in five years.

And that looked on the cards when Southampton went a goal ahead through Nathan Redmond after just 13 minutes – a loss for the Reds would hand Pep Guardiola the trophy. But Takumi Minamino came back soon after with a fine strike of his own.

Diogo Jota played the Japan international in, firing the ball past Alex McCarthy with real venom. It was a crucial moment in the match, and potentially the title race, but Sky Sports commentator Tyler might not have thought so.

In a tired voice, the match day veteran said as Minamino scored: “It’s 1-1. And Minamino has returned to St Mary’s where he played last season on loan with a very well hit equaliser. He is not overdoing the celebration.”

No one could accuse Tyler of overdoing the commentary either with fans immediately taking to social media to take fire at the 76-year-old. One fan replied: “Zero enthusiasm from Tyler. Sounds like he’s commentating on a funeral.”

Another wrote: “Martin Tyler by the way. Horrendous, horrendous, horrendous commentator.” And another tweeted: “I swear Martin Tyler didn’t even say a word when Liverpool scored, he does not rate them.”

A fourth posted: “Forgive me for thinking Martin Tyler was doing a reading at Takumi Minamino’s funeral there. Absolutely pathetic commentator now. Get rid.” Even takeaway pizza company Dominos took a pot-shot by saying: “How do we get a pizza to Martin Tyler to cheer him up a little?”

Much has been made in recent weeks of potential bias in the media after Guardiola insisted that the country wanted Liverpool to win the Premier League but Tyler hit out at that claim while speaking to his co-commentator Jamie Carragher. He said on comms: “I’d like to take issue with him on that.

“The only time I can think of the whole country wanting a team to win was Leicester (in the 2015-16 season). We support the underdogs here, you can’t call Manchester City or Liverpool an underdog.”
