NEW MILFORD — A black bear made a surprise appearance in the yard of a Mount Tom Road home Friday afternoon.

The solitary bear walked through the home’s backyard around 6:15 p.m. the homeowner told Hearst Connecticut Media.

The homeowner said the bear had shown up in the morning hours three times before, but this time they were able to capture it on video.

So far in 2021, 33 bear sightings have been reported in New Milford, according to data tracked by the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.

The agency notes on its website that black bear sightings are becoming increasingly common in Connecticut.

People should never feed bears or leave food or trash out that might attract them, according to DEEP. It’s a good idea to remove bird feeders from yards from the beginning of spring through late fall, and store grills in a shed or garage when not in use.

If you see a bear, observe the animal from a distance but don’t try to get closer for a photo, according to DEEP.
