Friday night’s 2023 Goodyear Cotton Bowl did not go well for the Ohio State Buckeyes, to say the least. Ohio State put on an embarrassing offensive display in their 14-3 loss to the Missouri Tigers.
Now, video allegedly showing Ryan Day’s son, RJ, stealing a Missouri player’s towel following a play along the Buckeye sideline is just adding insult to injury for Ohio State fans concerned about the program’s image following the loss.
Take a look at the video.
That sure looks a lot like Ryan Day’s son, RJ, and people all over the internet are making the connection. If it does turn out to be RJ Day, that seems like an unforced error from a PR perspective from the Ohio State program in a time they could not afford that at all.
In November, the program lost for the third straight year to nemesis Michigan. Soon after, quarterback Kyle McCord, who went 11-1 and threw 24 touchdowns against 6 interceptions this year, announced that he would enter the transfer portal. McCord eventually committed to Syracuse.
That meant that backup Devin Brown was left to start the Cotton Bowl. But the offense sputtered in the limited time that Brown was in the game before he left with a lower leg injury. True freshman Lincoln Keinholz was playing high school football in South Dakota a year ago, but he found himself playing in the Cotton Bowl. He showed some flashes, but the offense was, frankly, bad. They had just 203 yards of total offense against a Missouri defense not exactly known as being among the nation’s best.
The natives are certainly growing restless in Columbus. The fact they have definitely fallen behind Michigan in the Big Ten pecking order and haven’t won a College Football playoff game since 2020 is below the standards of the program. There’s every reason to expect that they can beat Michigan next year. But, if they don’t, it could be the end of Ryan Day’s tenure there.
RJ was a freshman quarterback this season at St Francis DeSales High School, throwing for over 1500 yards in his first year of varsity high school football. But, right now, he’s known for stealing towels from opposing players, if that is indeed him.
The towel belonged to star Tigers defensive back Kris Abrams-Daine
