Victim, suspect identified in deadly Coachella stabbing

A young woman has been arrested in the stabbing death of Elba Estrada, 53, who was killed Sunday evening in Coachella. Marilyn Cardenas, 22, of San Bernardino was identified as the suspect and arrested without incident. Cardenas was later booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center.

Deputies from the Thermal Sheriff’s Station responded to the 83-000 block of Avenue 48 in the city of Coachella at approximately 5:50 p.m., after receiving multiple reports of an assault with a deadly weapon. Upon arriving, the deputies located Estrada, suffering from a stab wound and lying on the ground. First aid was administered to Estrada, but she died at the scene.

Cardenas fled the area but deputies were able to locate and arrest the suspect, sheriff’s Sgt. Deirdre Vickers said.

There are no outstanding suspects sought in the investigation, the sheriff’s department said. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Investigator D.
