OLLIE Henry booted seven goals and Mason Cox stuffed the stats sheet as Collingwood sent a message to the rest of the competition in obliterating a disappointing Coburg by 104 points in their Smithy’s VFL clash at Piranha Park on Saturday.

The Magpies dominated the game from start to finish, blowing the Lions away with six goals to one in each of the second and third quarters as the home team’s progression took a massive hit.

Collingwood recorded its highest ever score against Coburg at Piranha Park and its biggest win over the Lions, while Coburg’s paltry 2.10 (22) was its lowest score against the Magpies, its equal lowest score at home and its lowest anywhere since kicking 2.1 (13) at North Ballarat in 1999.

Amazingly, the Lions had 40 more disposals than the Magpies, but lost the inside-50s 64-36 and clearances 35-31 as they slumped to 1-4 and needing a quick bounce back to keep their season alive.

Henry regularly shows himself to be too good for VFL football and he did so again, having 17 disposals, pulling in 10 marks and kicking 7.3 to now have 12 goals from three matches as he strives to get back in Collingwood’s AFL team.

Cox, meanwhile, responded to being overlooked as Brodie Grundy’s replacement in favour of AFL debutant Aiden Begg, stuffing the stats sheet with 21 disposals, seven marks, 25 hitouts, eight clearances and three goals, but he was frustrated to concede an astonishing eight free kicks (while receiving four).

And they weren’t the only stars for the Magpies, with impressive wingman Caleb Poulter (24 possessions, five marks), co-captain Campbell Hustwaite (23, five clearances, six inside-50s, one goal), late inclusion Campbell  Lane (21, eight inside-50s), Sam Fowler (20, nine inside-50s) and Finlay Macrae (21) all proving too elusive for the Lions.

Coburg sorely missed the leadership of co-captain Ryan Exon and drive of late withdrawal Sam Lowson, with most of its top possession winners being defenders.

Luke Bunker did lead the way with 27 touches and seven clearances), but Jhye Baddeley-Kelly (25, six marks, seven rebound-50s), Mitch Podhajski (23, seven marks, six rebounds), Jesse Corigliano (26, five marks), Jack Maibaum (20, eight marks) and Tom McKenzie (25) were always under the pump.

CARLTON shrugged off North Melbourne after quarter-time to win by 55 points at Ikon Park on Saturday to move into second spot on the ladder.

The Blues led by just three points at quarter-time, but five goals to one in the second term and six to two in the third put paid to any thoughts the Kangaroos had of pinching an upset in what remarkably was the teams’ first clash at Princes Park at VFA/VFL level.

Carlton prime-movers Paddy Dow (32 disposals, seven clearances, seven inside-50s) and Will Hayes (31, five marks, one goal) again did as they pleased, with Hayes’ goal from an impossible angle being a real highlight of the game.

Ned Cahill and Tom Williamson caused plenty of headaches for the Kangaroos coaching staff with identical numbers of 19 disposals, five marks and three goals each and Stefan Radovanovic (19, eight marks) was outstanding in defence.

Marty Hore was a clear standout for North Melbourne, roaming the backline to pick up 24 disposals, seven marks and 11 rebounds to minimise the damage as much as possible, while Mat Walker played his best game since crossing from Hawthorn, taking eight marks and kicking four goals after the late withdrawal of Charlie Comben.

Tom Powell had 18 and seven clearances, Will Phillips 18 and five inside-50s and Sam Collins and Patrick Walker 17 and six marks each, but it was a comprehensive display from the Blues.
