UPDATED: Mo Salah signs long-term contract with Liverpool

Salah’s previous deal was due to expire in the summer of 2023 as widespread reports suggested that Liverpool had failed to meet his financial demands to prolong his stay.

But Salah and Liverpool have finally reached an agreement to keep him at Anfield, although the club did not disclose the length of the new contract.

British reports said the 30-year-old had put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal. SkySports said he will now become the highest-paid player in the club’s history with a £350,000-a-week contract.

“I feel great and [I am] excited to win trophies with the club. It’s a happy day for everyone. It takes a little bit of time, I think, to renew, but now everything is done so we just need to focus on what’s next,” Salah told Liverpool’s official website.

“I think you can see in the last five or six years the team was always going [upwards]. Last season we were close to winning four, but unfortunately in the last week of the season we lost two trophies.

“I think we are in a good position to fight for everything. We have new signings as well. We just need to keep working hard, have a good vision, be positive and go for everything again.”

Revelation

After an unfruitful spell with Chelsea, Salah returned to the Premier League with a point to prove, having joined Liverpool from AS Roma in the summer of 2017.

He proved a revelation in his first season, finishing as the elite Premier League’s top scorer with 32 goals — a record for the most scored in a 38-game season.

It was the first of a series of records he set with the Reds. Dismissed earlier as a “one-season wonder”, Salah continued to reach new heights with his goal-scoring exploits.

He led Liverpool to the 2019 Champions League title, their first European crown since 2005, after converting a penalty in a 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the final before steering the club to a long-awaited Premier League triumph the following season.

Salah went on to win with the club the European Super Cup, Club World Cup, FA Cup and League Cup.

He finished as the Premier League’s joint top scorer with 23 goals last season to win the competition’s Golden Boot award for a third time. His overall tally is a staggering 156 goals in 254 appearances with Liverpool.

Salah will now be looking to lead Liverpool for more silverware after the agony of narrowly missing out on the Premier League and Champions League accolades last term.

Manchester City pipped Liverpool to the Premier League title by a single point before the team lost 1-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

“My message [to the fans] is the players in the team want to give our best next season to try to win all the trophies,” Salah added.

“As usual, you stay behind us and give us a big push and I am sure we are going to win trophies again [together].”
