Jim Miller brought the fight to Alexander Hernandez at UFC Fight Night 219, but it wasn’t enough to sway the judges.

After a back-and-forth and bloody 15 minutes, Hernandez (14-6 MMA, 6-5 UFC) was deemed the victor over Miller (35-17 MMA, 24-16 UFC) by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). The lightweight bout opened up the main card Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

The first round was strong in favor of Miller, who marched down Hernandez and tagged him with big strikes, including a head kick. Hernandez stayed poised, even though some of the shots noticeably wobbled him. In Round 2, Hernandez began to tip the momentum in the opposite direction as his pace and volume increased.

The third round was dramatic. Both men entered the final five minutes with blood on their faces. Hernandez was a step ahead until Miller swept his leg and snatched the back with 40 seconds left. Miller worked for a rear-naked choke and despite it seeming close at times, Hernandez escaped before the closing bell.

Hernandez, 30, snapped a two-fight skid in a fight he took on 10 days’ notice. While he’s largely competed against upper-half competition since his UFC debut in 2018, Hernandez has struggled to find result consistency. Saturday’s win gets him halfway to his first mulitfight winning streak since 2018.

Miller surpassed Diego Sanchez for fifth on the all-time accumulated UFC cage time standings. He extended his margin as the all-time UFC fights leader to two, at 41 total. The defeat Saturday snapped a three-fight winning streak.
