UEFA Europa League Bayer Leverkusen 3 Qarabağ 2 Full time
Leverkusen #Leverkusen
Bayer Leverkusen and Qarabag drew their first leg 2-2; the German side have progressed from seven of the 10 previous occasions they have drawn away from home in the first leg of a two-legged knockout tie in major European competition, although the most recent did see them eliminated to FK Krasnodar in the 2018-19 UEFA Europa League last 32 on away goals.
Qarabag have lost all four of their previous away games against German opposition in European competition by an aggregate score of 13-3, including a 5-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in the group stage; only in France have the Azerbaijani side lost as many away games in Europe as Germany (both 4).
Bayer Leverkusen have won all three of their home games in this season’s UEFA Europa League, scoring 14 goals. They could become only the second side in UEFA Cup/Europa League history to score 4+ goals in four consecutive home games, after Leverkusen themselves did so in 1994-95.
Qarabag have scored 2+ goals in each of their last five UEFA Europa League games, although they have also conceded at least once in all of those matches. Indeed, with 15 goals scored and 16 conceded, they are one of just two sides to both score and concede 15+ goals in the competition this season, along with Sparta Prague (16 scored, 16 conceded).
Only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (10) and Romelu Lukaku (8) have been directly involved in more UEFA Europa League goals this season than Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz (7 – 3 goals, 4 assists), despite the German only playing five games in the competition this term. Indeed, Wirtz has never had more goals (3), assists (4), or goal involvements (7) in a single Europa League campaign.
