Ubisoft Delists ‘Might And Magic X: Legacy’ From Steam Instead Of Fixing DRM Fiasco

One of my favorite PC games of all time is Might & Magic II: Gates To Another World, which probably dates me by admission. Oh well. It’s still one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played even though it’s old and not particularly impressive graphics-wise. I devoured that game and it’s one of the few games I bought a guide book for—something I talk about in my podcast with Colin Moriarty.

Now the Might & Magic series is back in the news, but not for pleasant reasons. Might & Magic X: Legacy is an old-school, first-person RPG in the same vein as Gates To Another World, though the 2014 game is much prettier. These are not to be confused with the Heroes Of Might & Magic tactical games, though they share a fantasy universe with one another.

The 7-year-old RPG (good grief, has it been that long?) has run into some problems lately, and Ubisoft is not making things better. The publisher announced that the game’s servers would go offline along with several other games. The full list of server shutdowns included:

  • Assassin’s Creed 2
  • Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands
  • Far Cry 2
  • Anno 1404
  • Might & Magic – Clash of Heroes
  • Splinter Cell Conviction
  • The Settlers 7
  • Might & Magic X – Legacy
  • For a game like Might & Magic X this didn’t seem like a very big deal. This is a single-player game, after all, and the servers were only there for DRM purposes. Unfortunately, when the servers went down, the single-player game was broken in the process, with players unable to proceed past Act 1.

When these issues first began on June 1st, a Ubisoft spokesperson told PC Gamer that the company was “aware and investigating the reported issues” but the fix appears to be simply delisting the game from Steam. It was for sale—and on sale during the Summer Steam Sale—with problems galore. Now it’s unavailable for purchase. This won’t fix matters for current owners of the game (like yours truly) but it will prevent newcomers from walking into a trap.

That’s not really a fix, of course. If you’re an avid player of the game you’re still out of luck. Hopefully Ubisoft will continue to work on the problem and hopefully the company—and other publishers—will realize the folly of tying single-player games to online servers solely for the sake of DRM. I’m not holding my breath, but that would certainly make sense and save a lot of headaches in the process.

You can see the game’s delisted Steam page here. For games you can still actually buy and play that are on sale during the almost-over Summer Steam Sale, check out my list:
