U.S. downs unidentified object over Lake Huron after flight restrictions

An unidentified object that had been tracked across Michigan was shot down by Air Force jets Sunday afternoon, two members of Congress from Michigan confirmed.

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin tweeted shortly before 4 p.m. that “the object has been downed by pilots from the US Air Force and National Guard,” while Rep. Jack Bergman tweeted: “The US military has decommissioned another ‘object’ over Lake Huron.”

Slotkin, a Democrat from Holly and a former CIA employee, earlier tweeted that the military was tracking the object.

“We’ll know more about what this was in the coming days, but for now, be assured that all parties have been laser-focused on it from the moment it traversed our waters,” Slotkin said.

Bergman, R-Watersmeet, said, “I appreciate the decisive action by our fighter pilots. The American people deserve far more answers than we have.”

The North American Aerospace Defense Command had implemented temporary flight restrictions over Lake Michigan near the US-Canada border with the help of the Federal Aviation Administration Sunday afternoon.

According to a Twitter post from NORAD, the airspace closure began at noon to ensure air traffic safety. The post was released at 1:44 p.m. and said the air restrictions have since been lifted.
