Aston Villa star Tyrone Mings has penned an emotional message of thanks to Newcastle United staff and supporters after his opening day of the Premier League campaign ended with a nasty injury.

The England international was stretched off the St James’ Park pitch in the 31st minute after picking up a ‘significant knee injury’. The Magpies were winning 2-1 at the time and went on to finish the match 5-1 victors.

Mings fell awkwardly after racing for the ball against Newcastle United man Alexander Isak and needed treatment on the pitch before leaving in a stretcher with his leg in a protective boot.

In an official statement on Monday morning, Aston Villa said: “Aston Villa can confirm that Tyrone Mings has sustained a significant knee injury. The England international was stretchered off from the field after damaging his knee during the first half of Villa’s match at Newcastle United on Saturday.

“The defender has undergone scans and will, unfortunately, require surgery ahead of a lengthy rehabilitation process.”

Taking to social media after the statement was released Mings shared his disappointment at the injury and promised to ‘give everything off the pitch to come back even better’.

He went on to thank Newcastle United players, fans and staff for how they reacted on the day and in the hours afterwards. Mings wrote: “The applause, the messages & the medical support I received on the day was really appreciated.”

Magpies fans online praised the Villa star’s ‘classy’ message and well wishes towards the defender came flooding in. One Newcastle United supporter wrote: “Wishing you a speedy recovery Tyrone. Awful seeing someone getting hurt while performing, not something anybody wants to see. Best of luck.”

Another added: “What a nice message from Tyrone Mings, I’m sure all Toon fans hope he has a speedy recovery.”
