Tyrone Mings England snub questioned as Erling Haaland point made

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor is “surprised” Tyrone Mings has been left out of England’s Qatar 2022 World Cup squad by Gareth Southgate.

The 29-year-old defender has 17 international caps to his name but won’t be adding to his tally at the upcoming World Cup, with Southgate opting for other options in the centre-back department on this occasion.

Conor Coady, Eric Dier, Kyle Walker, John Stones, Harry Maguire and Ben White have been chosen by the England boss, with Mings joining the likes of Fikayo Tomori and Lewis Dunk on the list of players snubbed this time around.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor questioned the decision to leave Mings out of the squad after highlighting the pace Southgate’s team lacks within defence.

“I am surprised he’s not in. I think Mings has made a few mistakes this season. Eric Dier has made a few mistakes, it happens with defenders,” said the former Villa striker.

“But all round, Mings’ game has been strong, aggressive, he’s probably performed the best against Haaland this season, performed his best for England and has never let them down. I think he’s unlucky not to be in it.

“Then you look at Dier-Stones-Maguire, and Stones has been a top defender, but we lack speed. You go into the knockout stages, you could play Brazil, who have got speed everywhere. Mbappe for France. I think you need a bit of speed in your defence.”
