A teenager suffered serious injuries after being struck by a pick-up truck in Norwich on Monday, fire officials said.

Members of the Taftville Fire Co. #2, American Ambulance and the Norwich Police Department responded at approximately 1:04 p.m. to Hunters Avenue at the junction of East Pratt Road for a report of a vehicle that hit two teenagers on a bicycle, Chief Timothy Jencks said.

On arrival, emergency personnel found both victims laying in the road, but not under the truck.

One victim was conscious and the other semi-responsive with a head injury, Jencks said. He said both victims were initially taken to Backus Hospital. The more seriously injured teen, who suffered suspected life-threatening injuries, was later transported to a higher-level care facility.

The truck driver was not injured. There was no information immediately available on the victims’ status or their identities.

Police are investigating the incident. Fire crews used air-lift bags to raise the truck, enabling police to pull out and examine the bike the two victims had been riding.

Jencks said the area where the incident happened is not far from the Sacred Heart School on Hunters Avenue, an often-busy section of the village with dead-end streets and lots of pedestrian, biker and vehicle traffic.

This is a developing story
