Two die from drowning in Richmond, Burke counties

Two people drowned this week in Augusta-area pools.

Anthony Mack, 49, of Claxton, died Tuesday afternoon. He had been pulled from a pool Saturday in the 1600 block of Goshen Road and transported to Augusta University Medical Center.

Just a few hours before Mack’s death, a drowning occurred in Burke County at 11:02 a.m. Tuesday. Deputies were told that a 4-year-old boy was found unresponsive in a residential pool on Deer Run Road, according to the Burke County Sheriff’s Office. He was transported to Burke County Hospital where he died.

The Goshen Road drowning is the first of the year for Richmond County. In 2021, there were eight drownings, according to the Richmond County Coroner’s Office. All of the deaths in 2021 occurred between August and November.
