Twelve years later, Jack Layton continues to inspire

Jack Layton #JackLayton

Twelve years ago on this day, Canada lost a great leader and friend. Jack Layton inspired people by example, demonstrating that working together for social and economic justice is possible and achievable.

On this day, we remember that change is achievable when we come together with hope, dedication and love.

Honouring Jack’s legacy through social-justice centred journalism

Named in his legacy, rabble.ca and the Institute for Change Leaders created the Jack Layton Journalism for Change Fellowship in 2017. This fellowship supports emerging writers and journalists who are passionate and engaged in developing unique voices in social change reporting.

This past year’s Jack Layton Journalism for Change Fellow was Kiah Lucero. Lucero is a Calgary-based journalist with a keen-eye for pro-labour, environmentally-conscious and trauma-informed storytelling.

In her final piece as the 2022/23 Jack Layton Journalism for Change Fellow, Lucero investigated the hardships and precarity faced by temporary foreign workers in Canada. You can read that piece here.

We’ll be starting our search for the 2023/24 Journalism for Change Fellow in the weeks to come. Please keep your eyes peeled for that announcement and bookmark this page on your browser.

…Can I ask you a question?

Do you ever feel that, with everything that’s going on around the world and a million breaking news stories in your face, on your phone, every day, it’s hard to stay on top of the news that actually matters to you?

That’s why I believe rabble.ca is so important; our national writing team cuts through the corporate news releases, the misinformation and the buzzy, fear-mongering clickbait to share the heart of the stories that most affect Canadians —all through a progressive lens, always corporate free and never behind a paywall.

We believe exceptional, independent media should be accessible to all. But in order to keep this mandate going, we’ll need your help.

Support rabble.ca today during our summer fundraiser and keep progressive journalism free for everyone. Every little bit counts!

Whether it be a one-time donation or a small monthly contribution, you’ll be securing rabble’s place in Canadian media for years to come.
