Sixty-one years later, Snider finally had company in the Dodgers record books.
Justin Turner’s first-inning home run in Game 3 of the World Series on Friday was the 11th postseason homer of his career, matching Snider’s club record. And like Snider’s shot off Wynn, Turner’s no-doubter in the first inning off Rays starter Charlie Morton snapped a scoreless tie — in this case, before the Rays even had a chance to bat.
Thanks to a series of expansions to baseball’s postseason since Snider’s days roaming center field for the Dodgers, Turner had many more chances to swing for the fences. His 11th career postseason homer came in Turner’s 69th career playoff game and 298th playoff plate appearance. Snider hit 11 homers in 36 playoff games and 149 plate appearances.
Turner is also first or tied for first in Dodgers postseason history in hits (75), RBIs (40) and doubles (18).
Here’s another example of how today’s game is different: After hitting a Major League-leading 118 home runs during the shortened 2020 regular season — that’s 1.97 home runs per game, an all-time record — the Dodgers have continued hitting for power in the postseason. The home run was their 28th at Globe Life Field, where Los Angeles was playing its 16th game, including a trio of regular-season contests. That’s more home runs than the Rangers, who call the new stadium home and hit 27 homers in 30 games this season.
Incidentally, Turner and Snider have another Dodgers hitter nipping at their heels. Corey Seager has 10 career postseason home runs, including seven so far this year.
