Wade Miley’s Cincinnati Reds teammates – catcher Tucker Barnhart included – expressed how happy they were for Miley after the first no-hitter of his 11-season Major League Baseball career, which also was Barnhart’s first in his eight MLB seasons.

But among the revelations from Barnhart as he spoke to reporters after Miley’s no-no was that as rain delayed the scheduled start of Friday night’s series opener between the Reds and Cleveland, Miley suggested that it should be canceled – using the baseball jargon “bang the game.”

“Wade was saying that we should bang the game because of the rain from about 6:30 (p.m.) on,” Barnhart laughed. “A lot of weird, funny things happened. But I’m really glad that we didn’t. But everything was working. I think that’s obvious.”

“I kept coming in, telling everybody they banged it,” Miley said, when asked what he did during the rain delay. “Position players getting pretty frustrated with me, and it’s kinda what I do. But just try to stay loose – not put too much pressure or think too much, just stay loose and see what happens. And then David (Bell) came in and said (first pitch) was at 8:30, and I was trying to get him to go ahead and tell (Mike Moustakas) they banged it. Because Moose gets awful mad at me when I say that, and I was trying to get David on board and he wouldn’t do it. But I’m definitely glad they didn’t bang it.”

Barnhart added – among postgame reactions – that he’s “never really seen an entire team so happy for just one person in my career.”
