This hasn’t been a good weekend for President Donald Trump. While by this time we would have assumed that everyone would be discussing the upcoming big debate between him and Joe Biden, instead Trump is being faced with tax evasion allegations.

If you are late to the party, let us bring you up to speed. A shocking report by The New York Times on Trump’s taxes alleges that he paid only $750 in federal income taxes in 2016, the year he won the presidency, and another $750 during his first year in office. The NYT report states that they have obtained his tax return data spanning two decades.

The report alleges that Trump paid no income taxes at all in 10 of the previous 15 years because he reported “losing much more money than he made”. According to the report, the actual story of his tax returns, which he fought desperately to keep private, is quite different from what he kept telling the public. The report found that even though Trump declared losses, he continued to have a luxurious lifestyle by withholding taxes on what could be considered personal expenses, including declaring his estates as investment properties and writing off aircraft travel between his properties as business expenses.

When asked about the NYT story at a news conference on September 27, Trump said it is “totally fake news”, according to USA Today. When asked about an estimated figure of the amount of tax he had paid, he said, “I paid a lot and I paid a lot of state income taxes, too.” Trump said. “New York State charges a lot and I paid a lot of money in state.” As per USA Today, POTUS was the first major presidential candidate in four decades to refuse to release tax returns. He is currently involved in a legal battle with New York prosecutors asking for his tax records.

As per The Daily Beast, Trump attacked the IRS, by saying they “treat me like the Tea Party”. “They treat me very badly,” he claimed. “It’s under audit. It’s been under audit for a long time,” he said of his returns. “It’s all be revealed. It’s going to come out,” he later said of the IRS audit, which he called “very big, very powerful and very accurate”. When journalists tried to ask follow up questions, Trump ended the press conference after saying he would “release everything”.

By now we know how active Trump is on Twitter. So, amid these allegations, he tweeted, “FAKE NEWS!” And, if POTUS tweets, it is expected there will be a lot of reactions. This particular tweet had more than 30K replies. One user suggested, “There’s a easy way to clear this up, release your tax returns.” Another said, “Raise your hand if you think that Donald Trump needs to be removed from office immediately.”

Twitterati slammed him by calling him “fake President”. A user declared, “He always claims it’s fake news.. but he’s the fake president… Almost time to go…” One concurred, “We never heard about fake news until we got a fake president.” Another said, “So why is our fake president unraveling today? Oh wait. That’s every day.” Another stated, “Fake President and his Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. So much winning.”
