Former President Donald Trump released a 12-page statement bashing the Capitol-riot investigation on Monday, saying it was trying to stop him from running for president again.
In the statement released through his Save America PAC, Trump once again called the House select committee investigating the riot a “kangaroo court,” and claimed it had no “equal representation” of Republicans and Democrats.
The panel consists of seven Democrats and two Republicans. House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy pulled Republicans off the panel last year after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat, rejected two of his picks for the panel. The two picks, Trump allies Reps. Jim Banks and Jim Jordan, had voted against certifying President Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory on the day of the Capitol riot.
Trump said in his statement: “The January 6th Unselect Committee is disgracing everything we hold sacred about our Constitution. If they had any real evidence, they’d hold real hearings with equal representation.”
“They don’t, so they use the illegally-constituted committee to put on a smoke and mirrors show for the American people, in a pitiful last-ditch effort to deceive the American public … again.”
Trump did not provide evidence for his claim that the committee was illegal. The House voted and approved the creation of the select committee last year.
Trump also dedicated nearly nine pages of his statement to push baseless conspiracy theories that the 2020 election was rigged, saying his supporters went to the Capitol on January 6, 2021, to hold “elected officials accountable for the obvious signs of criminal activity throughout the Election.”
Trump and his allies filed more than 40 lawsuits in state and federal courts challenging the 2020 election results, all of which failed.
In his statement, Trump also accused the committee of attempting to “stop a man that is leading in every poll, against both Republicans and Democrats by wide margins, from running again for the presidency.” He did not provide any evidence for that claim.
He accused the Democrats of “destroying” the US, citing inflation and rising gas prices.
“The Democrats know that I would correct all of this, and they are doing everything in their power to stop me — but we can’t be stopped. We have to Save America,” he added, without giving further specifics.
Trump has teased a 2024 run for months, though he has yet to make any official announcements.
The statement came after the January 6 committee held its second public hearing on Monday, in which it played pre-recorded testimony from Trump’s former attorney general, Bill Barr, in which he debunked the voter-fraud claims.
“He’s become detached from reality if he really believes this stuff,” Barr said in the video. “There was never an indication of interest in what the actual facts were.”
