Donald Trump returned to the White House on Monday night after being hospitalised with the coronavirus, insisting he felt well and advising Americans that they should not let the disease “dominate” them as the US death toll from the pandemic surpasses 210,000.
The president appeared on the Truman Balcony to give a thumbs-up to the press, a spectacle that inspired his ex-communications director Anthony Scaramucci to compare him to an “American Mussolini”, a parallel also noted by anchor Joy Reid and Republican pundit Steve Schmidt on MSNBC.
Mr Trump’s return after three nights at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center came despite his physician Dr Sean Conley warning he was “not out of the woods yet” and also attracted criticism over his decision to take off his face mask and interact with staffers even though he is likely to still be contagious.
