Tottenham Hotspur almost got off to the perfect start against Southampton on Sunday.

Harry Kane volleyed home an excellent opener past Alex McCarthy to put them 1-0 to the good – but it was then ruled out for offside.

At the very start of the move, Heung-Min Son was adjudged to have been ahead of the play, cruelly taking away Kane’s strike.

The goal was a great showcase of what we might see from Spurs this season with right-back Matt Doherty superbly reaching a second ball with his grit and determination.

The ex-Wolves man was able to head the ball back into the middle of the penalty area and it was there Kane met the ball with aplomb.

England striker Kane’s instincts were laid bare as he crashed the ball home between McCarthy’s legs.

Southampton did almost take the lead immediately after the event with Hugo Lloris producing a stunning save.

A dangerous corner fell to Che Adams in the box and his powerful effort was smartly tipped over the crossbar to keep the score at 0-0.

But Danny Ings then thought he’d opened the scoring when he clipped over a stranded Lloris.

His effort was also ruled out as replays confirmed the French guardian had headed the ball onto Ings’ elbow.
