Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has revealed Tanguy Ndombele will miss the final two matches of the season with a knee injury.

The French midfielder has played just 64 minutes since the restart and sat out Wednesday’s 3-1 win at Newcastle after feeling pain behind his knee at training on Monday.

Mourinho initially played down the problem but, speaking after his first League win at St. James’ Park, the Spurs boss said Ndombele would not be available to face Leicester or Crystal Palace.

“I know that Ndombele will not help us because his injury will keep him out for the next two matches,” Mourinho said.

It is a fitting end to the season for Ndombele, who has struggled with persistent muscle injuries since joining Spurs from Lyon for a club-record £55million last July.

Before the lockdown, Mourinho criticised the 23-year-old’s fitness, complaining that he was “always injured” and he has not trusted him to start a game since the resumption of the top flight.

Spurs have already turned down an approach from Barcelona for a swap deal involving the France international and he is expected to be subject of transfer speculation over the summer.

Mourinho said Dele Alli, who missed a fourth match with a hamstring problem, could return against Leicester on Sunday.

“Maybe Dele can give us a hand in the last match or maybe this weekend,” he said. “Eric Dier is coming in the last match as another option. Let’s see if we can end the season strong and get that Europa League position.”
