Porro is finally back to his feet following that collision with Kamara, and fortunately will be able to continue as half-time looms.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:53
CHANCE!!! A Villa free-kick routine breaks down, but Kamara keeps the ball alive by lunging in to win it and find Diaby. Porro has stayed down from the challenge as the visitors continue playing, but Carlos can’t make the most of his first-time shot and drags it wide!

We’ll play SIX added minutes to close out a first half that’s been high on chances, drama and controversy!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:51
BALL IN THE NET!!! The flag denies Spurs a second!! Rapid-fire counter-attacking play culminates in Hojbjerg putting Son clean through on goal, and the captain sets himself before stroking a masterful finish into the far corner! The linesman doesn’t raise it straight away, but a few seconds late the flag is up to correctly call Son offside!

Gil latches onto Udogie’s pass down the line and pulls it back into the middle, but Konsa makes the block which sends the ball into the gloves of Martinez.

14:47
Porro wins the ball well in midfield and spreads play wide to Johnson. He burns past Digne down the right-hand side and cuts the ball back into the middle, but Gil refrains from shooting and is easily dispossessed!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:44
CHANCE!! Spurs pinch possession in Villa’s half once more and Johnson races forward with the ball at his feet. He has Kulusevski and Son arriving in the box, but a timely intervention from Konsa sees the ball deflect back into Martinez’s gloves!

Yellow Card John McGinn

14:42
WIDE!!! Johnson and Kulusevski play a one-two down the right, and a chance opens up for the latter to shoot inside the box. He does so, curling a powerful effort beyond the dive of Martinez, but also beyond the far post as the ball whistles past it!

Since a 2-1 win over Brighton in November 2022, Villa haven’t won a Premier League game away from home after conceding first.

Lo Celso, making his first Spurs start since October 2021, has scored just his second Premier League goal for Tottenham, with his first coming on 21st November 2020, three years and five days ago.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:36
A goal, a disallowed goal, and a nasty challenge well worthy of the yellow card it produced, but play is finally flowing freely again after what’s been a frankly crazy last few minutes!

14:35
Substitution Rodrigo Bentancur Colmán Pierre-Emile Kordt Højbjerg
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:34
DENIED!!! There are mere inches in this one, but after a lengthly, lengthy look at it, the VAR officials decide that Watkins was a fraction beyond the last man Emerson when Digne swung that ball into the box, and so Villa’s immediate response is chalked off!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:33
BALL IN THE NET!!! What a response this might just be from the Villans! Straight from kick-off, the visitors come down the left and Digne fires a teasing cross into the area. Watkins arrives early and glances a header goalwards, which bounces down, past Vicario, and into the back of the net! Just three touches after the goal Villa appear to have equalised, but the referee’s been instructed to have another look after initially giving the goal.

Gil escapes down the left-hand side and whips a fantastic cross into the box. Son is just centimetres away from heading it in, but the bouncing ball is put behind for a corner by Digne as Villa try to withstand wave after wave of Tottenham pressure!

Relentless Spurs pressing sees both Martinez and Carlos back into a corner, but they’re able to pass their way out of danger as the hosts continue to turn the screw!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:24
Kamara’s the next Villa midfielder to be dispossessed in his own defensive third as Son steals away with the ball and finds Gil, but his low cross is scythed clear by Carlos!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:22
OFFSIDE!!! Lovely one-touch play from Spurs sees Son and Bentancur combine for the latter to send Kulusevski through on goal, but Martinez closes the gap brilliantly to make the save, just as the offside flag is raised against the Swedish forward!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:21
OVER!!! What a miss! Porro’s low throughball sends Johnson racing in behind the Villa defence and into open pasture. He squares for the unmarked Son in the box, but it’s slightly behind the Spurs captain and he puts a first-time effort over the bar from right in front! The offside flag is raised to call back Johnson, but you’d hope a striker of Son’s quality would be finishing chances like that regardless!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:19
McGinn loses the ball deep in his own half and Kulusevski seizes it to find Johnson in the box, but the Welshman’s cut-back is intercepted and cleared by Konsa!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:17
McGinn slides a throughball into Watkins’ path which is swung at and missed by Ederson, but Vicario’s off his line to claim the ball before the England striker can get there.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:17
Having made a 10-game unbeaten start in the Premier League this season, Spurs have lost their last two matches. They’ve opened the scoring in both of these defeats, with only four teams ever losing three consecutive Premier League games after scoring first – Blackburn in April 2007, Sunderland in February 2011, Wolves in April 2012 and Leicester in December 2014.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:15
SAVED!!! Martinez to the rescue for Villa! A delightful flick from Kulusevski puts Gil through on goal, but his well-hit shot is parried by a diving Martinez! Porro follows in with a close-range header but can only send it over the bar as Villa continue to hang on here!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:14
Udogie turns brilliantly to create shooting space in the box off Lo Celso’s pass, but he chooses to pass rather than pull the trigger and it’s intercepted by Carlos for Villa!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:11
WIDE!! Villa win a free-kick on the left wing and Digne delivers a pinpoint cross into the box. Torres rises to meet the ball in the centre, but his cushioned header back across the face of goal drifts beyond the post!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:09
OFF THE POST!!! Another early opening for Spurs! Kulusevski ghosts past Torres to latch onto Son’s smart throughball and steps away from Carlos before shooting. Martinez is beaten, but the ball rattles back off the far post, and Son’s rebound on the angle is blocked behind by Luiz with Villa at sixes and sevens!
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
14:07
OVER!!! Udogie races in behind the defence to get on the end of a long ball forward from Lo Celso, but can’t keep his composure in the box and skies his shot with Martinez stranded!

Defender Diego Carlos is the only incoming player for Villa, replacing Youri Tielemans following the 3-1 win over Fulham. That change sees Ezri Konsa move to right-back, and Matty Cash pushing forward into a wide midfield role, with captain John McGinn occupying the opposite flank.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa
13:48
It’s a Tottenham side that’s been ravaged by injuries, with a defence made up entirely of full-backs and a frontline featuring four wingers. Spurs have made four changes from their 2-1 loss at Wolves last time out, with Bentancur, Lo Celso and Bryan Gil coming in alongside the returning Destiny Udogie. Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr are both absent through suspension and injury respectively, while Emerson Royal and Ben Davies move into centre-back roles.

Unai Emery’s resurgent Villans will be no pushovers though, sitting just a point and a place behind Spurs coming into this one. Villa responded to a shock 2-0 loss at Nottingham Forest with a 3-1 victory over Fulham last time out, and three points in north London would take them level on points with third-placed Liverpool.

Spurs’ high-flying, unbeaten start to the season has come crashing down in recent weeks, losing back-to-back to Chelsea and Wolves prior to the international break. Ange Postecoglou’s side remain fourth in the table though, and could climb to second and close the gap on leaders Arsenal to just a point if they win here.
