Timo Werner’s off the mark with his first official goal for Chelsea, so we don’t have to worry about that anymore. And while it took him four games to get here, it’s not like he was slacking off or hiding before — in fact, he’s finished in the top three of the player ratings in three of the four games, winning Man of the Match twice now.

But we got him mainly for goals, and since he can be a streaky scorer, maybe this is now the start of something truly fun.

Safe to say that there was no false advertising over Mendy, with the big man playing big in goal, making a couple excellent saves, and controlling the airspace save for one cross that slipped through his fingers. He kept Chelsea in it when others might have conceded, showing good footwork in the process as well (both when making a save down low and close, and when picking out the fullbacks with those Kepa-esque medium-length passes). And as great as it was to see him to do the routine stuff, making the save on Sergio Reugilon’s powerdrive, flexing strong wrists to deflect it over, was certainly anything but.

He did less well in the shootout, but that’s more just bad luck and a bit of a mental game that we certainly have a great track record in coaching. (Or better yet, we can just not concede silly goals and win in regulation.)

Three starts, three third place finishes in these community player ratings for Kurt Zouma. With Lampard still searching for his best center back combination, I’d say it’s pretty clear who one half of that should be.
