Canadian rapper Tory Lanez’s assault trial, where he is accused of shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in her feet, begins Monday—here’s a breakdown of what’s transpired so far.
July 12, 2020Lanez was arrested on a felony count of carrying a concealed weapon in a vehicle at 4:30 a.m. in the Hollywood Hills during a traffic stop due to reports of gunfire following a party at the home of Kylie Jenner, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed to Billboard.
July 15, 2020Megan confirmed in a since-deleted Instagram post that her injuries were gunshot wounds and TMZ released footage of the arrest where Megan is seen limping from a vehicle, leaving a trail of what appears to be blood behind her.
July 16, 2020TMZ reported Lanez allegedly shot Megan during the incident, though Megan reportedly told police she cut her feet on glass.
July 27, 2020In an Instagram Live, Megan criticized people who were creating “fake narratives and making up stories,” but also thanked supporters for the well wishes, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Aug, 19, 2020Megan released pictures of her injury in a since-deleted Instagram post, which TMZ reposted, including a screenshot of the caption in which Megan addressed the rumors and claimed she was shot, saying she “got hit at the back of her feet because when I got shot I was WALKING AWAY FACING THE BACK.”
Aug. 20, 2020The next day, Megan addressed the incident on Instagram Live, claiming that Lanez shot her after she’d had a disagreement with Lanez, Kelsey Harris (Megan’s now ex-friend) and Lanez’s bodyguard, and saying she only initially told police it was glass because she “didn’t want to die” by the hands of the police—this incident took place at the height of the Black Lives Matter movement of 2020.
Sept. 25, 2020Lanez released his 17-track album “Daystar” following a tweet in which he told fans that he was “sorry for [his] silence”—and on the song “Money Over Fallouts” he accused Megan of lying with the lyrics “How the f*** you get shot in your foot, don’t hit no bones or tendons.”
Oct. 8, 2020Former Los Angeles district attorney Jackie Lacey released a statement stating that Lanez was arrested on charges of assault with a semiautomatic firearm—personal use of a firearm—and carrying a loaded and unregistered firearm in the vehicle.
Oct. 13, 2020A judge issued a protective order against Lanez, requiring him to forfeit all firearms, stay at least 100 yards from Megan and not engage in any written, personal or electronic contact, according to the New York Daily News.
July 25, 2021Lanez violated the protective order after making a surprise appearance on rapper Da Baby’s Rolling Loud set in Miami moments after Megan’s performance, resulting in his bail being increased from $190,000 to $250,000, according to Pitchfork.
Dec. 14, 2021A Los Angeles County judge upheld the assault charges against Lanez, and during the court hearing, Los Angeles Police Det. Ryan Stogner testified that Megan claimed Lanez yelled “Dance, b**!” as he shot at her feet but later apologized and offered Megan money to stay quiet.
Jan. 13, 2022At his arraignment, Lanez pleaded not guilty to the counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, personal use of a firearm and carrying a loaded, unregistered firearm in the vehicle.
Feb. 23, 2022In a tweet speculated to be directed at Megan, Lanez said that you “can’t buy and tweet your way out of this one,” and in a second tweet insinuated that he had sexual relations with both Megan and Harris, which is what he claimed he apologized for.
April 5, 2022Prosecutors requested Lanez’s bail be revoked due to his tweets violating the protective order—the judge instead increased his bail from $250,000 to $350,000 and demanded that Lanez not directly or indirectly speak about Megan, according to Complex.
April 24, 2022Megan appeared emotional in an interview on “CBS Mornings” with host Gayle King, stating that she “was really scared” that she might die—in a later interview with CBS News on April 26, King said that she believed Megan.
Oct. 26, 2022A judge ordered Lanez be placed on house arrest until his trial for the alleged shooting, according to the Los Angeles Times, more than a month after singer August Alsina claimed Lanez and eight bodyguards jumped him after their Chicago show (Lanez denied the allegation).
Dec. 5, 2022Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford released Lanez from house arrest—and in the same hearing, the defense named Kris Jenner’s boyfriend, Corey Gamble, and Kylie Jenner as potential witnesses, alleging that they might have witnessed an argument between Lanez and Megan at Kylie Jenner’s party, according to Rolling Stone.
Dec. 6, 2022Lanez received a new felony charge of discharging a firearm with gross negligence and has entered a plea of not guilty—if convicted of all counts, Lanez could face more than 22 years in prison.
This isn’t the first time Lanez was accused of violent acts. Lanez and his security allegedly attacked “Love and Hip Hop: Miami” star Prince Michael Harty in the face both in 2019 and 2020. The two settled in court earlier this month, according to documents obtained by Radar Online. The amount of the settlement has not been disclosed.
Canadian rapper Drake released a joint album with rapper 21 Savage titled “Her Loss,” in which Drake came under fire for a lyric on the song “Circo Loco” that seemed to allude to Megan, rapping “This b**** lie ‘bout gettin’ shots, but she still a stallion.” According to Complex, later that day Megan’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, released a statement in regards to the song, saying that “the ignorant continue to support [Megan’s] attacker.” Fellow rapper and album producer Lil Yachty claimed on Instagram Live that the lyric wasn’t about Megan, but instead generally about women who lie about getting their bodies surgically done.
