Tony Adams has revealed he was left ‘annoyed’ at Arsenal’s transfer deals for Martin Odegaard, Nicolas Pepe and Willian.

Arsenal signed Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid last month but Adams says his former club ‘did not need’ the Norway international.

Adams has also criticised Arsenal’s decision to sign former Chelsea star Willian and Ivory Coast international Pepe, who cost the club more than £70million.

Speaking after Arsenal’s 4-2 victory over Leeds United on Sunday, Adams told Premier League productions: ‘To be honest, there’s an argument that you don’t need Martin Odegaard.

‘I got so annoyed that we bought Pepe and Willian in when you’ve got two kids [Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka] bursting into the team.

‘There’s other areas in the team that you could look at, there’s holes in that team, we saw how fragile they are defensively. The defence has always been the weak link.

‘As the sporting director of Arsenal, you wouldn’t be getting Odegaard in, you’d be getting good, strong defenders into the team instead.’

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored his first Premier League hat-trick as Arsenal beat Leeds 4-2 on Sunday.

The win sees Arsenal climb above Leeds into tenth place and six points behind fourth-placed Liverpool in the table.

Following Arsenal’s win, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said: ‘I am really happy because I watch them so much and I know how difficult they are.

‘They are a fantastic team and they showed that over the course of the game, they showed spirit at 4-0 down, throw everything at you and make life very difficult.

‘I try to do the best I can, they are a fantastic team, they put you under a lot of trouble and everyone knows their roles.

‘They are very man orientated and we did really good for big period. Credit to them, to maintain the level of belief at 4-0 is remarkable.

‘I said at half time, it is 0-0. If their is team in the league who will throw everything at you it is Leeds.

‘We conceded from a set-piece, they pulled another back and their energy level is incredible. It is difficult to maintain the physical demands of the game.’
