Tom Jones on the importance of his song for his late wife
Tom Jones is not only a household name in Britain, but all over the world too, thanks to his long and successful singing career. He appears tonight on Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway on ITV. But how did the singer get to where he is today?
Tom Jones has a whopping net worth of $300million, according to CelebrityNetWorth.com.
That’s currently equivalent to around £217million.
It’s an impressive fortune that Tom has accumulated through his successful singing career, which began in the 1960s.
Tom has met and sang with various famous music artists over the years, including Elvis – whom he called a “true friend” – but his early life was a world away from the glitz and glamour of the music industry that quickly turned him into a global star.
Tom was born Thomas John Woodward in Pontypridd, an industrial town in South Wales where Tom’s father worked as a coal miner.
Tom started singing at an early age, performing at family gatherings, weddings, and as part of his school choir.

In 1957, when he was only 16, Tom married Linda Trenchard, his high school girlfriend.
The couple welcomed their son, Mark, into the world a month after their wedding, and Tom started working at a glove factory to support his small family.
Despite Tom making headlines throughout his career for his infidelities, he and Linda stayed together until Linda’s death in 2016.
Tom first gained his reputation as a talented singer in 1963, when he became the frontman for the Welsh group Tommy Scott and the Senators.
A year later, the group recorded several solo tracks and played at gigs and working men’s clubs in South Wales.

At one gig, Tom was spotted by Gordon Mills, a London-based manager who immediately became Tom’s manager and took him to London, changing his name from Tom Woodward to Tom Jones.
Tom’s first single, ‘Chills and Fever’, was released in 1964, and although it did not reach the charts, his second single did.
‘It’s Not Unusual’ became an international hit and hurtled Tom into the spotlight.
After the song reached number one in the UK’s single charts, Tom recorded theme tune songs for the film What’s New Pussycat? and the James Bond film Thunderball.
In 1965, Tom met Elvis for the first time in Hollywood, and the following year the singer received a Grammy award for Best New Artist.

Tom was inspired by blues music growing up, but he has been described as a “musical shape shifter” and has recorded songs of many genres, from R&B to gospel.
In 1966, he released his version of the country hit ‘Green Green Grass of Home’, which went straight to the top of the UK charts.
Other 1960s hit tracks were ‘I’ll Never Fall in Love Again’, ‘I’m Coming Home’, and ‘Delilah’ – each of them reaching number two in the UK singles chart.
Tom later appeared on television, with his own show called This Is Tom Jones, from 1969 to 1971.
Since then, the singer has appeared as a guest on many TV programmes and has even tried his hand at acting, starring in Pleasure Cove and Fantasy Island.

Tom has been a coach on BBC’s The Voice UK since the show first launched in 2012, and he first appeared on the judging panel alongside Jessie J, Danny O’Donoghue, and Will.i.a.m.
This year, Tom announced the launch of his latest album, Surrounded by Time, which is set to be released in April.
