Nathan Drake, meet Nathan Drake.

Worlds collided as Sony Pictures and director Ruben Fleischer (Venom) set out to finally film Uncharted, the movie adaptation of the popular videogame franchise. In a series of first-look photos of the production, Tom Holland, who plays charismatic treasure-seeker Nathan Drake in the film, meets Nolan North, the actor who voiced Nathan in the games.

In passing the torch to Holland, North tweeted of this moment, “Like looking into a mirror! Proud to have @TomHolland1996 continuing the Drake legacy! Absolutely smashing it!”

And Holland, who has a habit of accidentally spoiling movie secrets, joked on social media, “Do you think Sony would be pissed if I spontaneously uploaded a first look picture. I got Nolan’s approval so I guess they can’t fire me now.”

As it happens, he wasn’t kidding. The actor soon shared an image of himself in character as Nathan.

The images also come with a few clues as to the plot of the movie. One photo sees a mysterious artifact and the other features a book on the famed explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Both come with a quote from Magellan, as shared on the film’s official Twitter account: “The adventure begins. ‘Meet the shadowy future without fear and conquer the unknown.’ – Ferdinand Magellan.”

The main Uncharted game series included 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, 2009’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, 2011’s Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, and 2016’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. They followed Nathan, a supposed descendant of Sir Francis Drake, as an adult traveling the world to tomb raid historic locations in search of coveted lost treasures, from unlocking the secrets to the mythic El Dorado to tracking down the lost pirate gold of Henry Avery.

Holland’s version of the character will be younger than we’ve seen in the games, while Mark Wahlberg will costar as Victor “Sully” Sullivan, Nathan’s mentor. The cast also includes Antonio Banderas, Truth or Dare’s Sophia Ali, and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Tati Gabrielle.

Uncharted has been years and years in the making with multiple directors bowing in and out of the project. Production was finally meant to start earlier this year only to be delayed again by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, as the photos show, everyone’s in business with new safety precautions. The adventure, as Sony says, truly begins.
