‘Told no’: 57-year-old manager who loves Goncalo Guedes has turned down the Wolverhampton Wanderers job – journalist

Former Athletic Bilbao and Valencia manager Marcelino has turned down the Wolves job.

That’s according to journalist Pedro Morata, who was speaking to Directo Gol.

The Spanish manager was one of a number of names linked with the job at Molineux.

In recent days a whole host of managers have been linked with the vacant role.

90Min believed that Nuno Espirito Santo was imminently due to return to the club.

Former Wolves defender Rob Edwards has also been linked with the job.

Interim head coach Steve Davis will be pleased that during the speculation his side were able to beat Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

It lifted Wolves out of the relegation zone ahead of this evening’s trip to Crystal Palace.

Whoever does become the new Wolves manager, it’s unlikely to be Marcelino, who has reportedly turned down the job.

Pedro Morata was speaking about the manager who looks to have his heart set on the Spanish national team job.

Morata says that Wolves was one of three Premier League jobs he has turned down.

“As far as I have absolutely confirmed Marcelino has turned down the possibility of coaching Brighton and Nottingham Forest,” Morata said.

“Jorge Mendes phoned Marcelino’s people for Wolverhampton. All three clubs were told no by Marcelino.

“I think Marcelino is waiting in case Luis Enrique does not continue in the Spanish national team as coach of Spain. He wants to be Spain coach.

“Marcelino is certainly one of those who is sure to be on the shortlist of the Royal Spanish Federation.

Marcelino would have been completely new to the Premier League, but not the entirety of Wolves’ squad.

The 57-year-old has already admitted he’s a big fan of forward Goncalo Guedes.

Guedes played 80 times under Marcelino at Valencia, more than he’s played under any other manager.

Marcelino previously said about Guedes: “I had already seen him at Benfica and I liked him a lot.

“In addition, Unai Emery, given his good relationship with Benfica, gave us a huge help.

“I thought he would do well, but with the adaptation it’s always an unknown.”

Unfortunately for Wolves fans, they won’t be seeing Marcelino and Guedes combine once again at Molineux.
