More than 3 million people around the world play Wordle, the online word puzzle invented by Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle, every day.

The game, in which players have six tries to discover a mysterious five-letter word, was originally created by Wardle for his puzzle-loving girlfriend and himself to have fun with during COVID-19 lockdowns. But as of January 2021, millions of people were hooked on Wordle—and that passion continues to this day.

Wordle is a very simple game: if a letter is correct and in the right position on the screen it becomes green. If it’s the correct letter but in the wrong spot, it goes yellow. A wrong letter which doesn’t belong to the final word turns gray.

There’s one word to be guessed per day and it’s the same no matter where you are in the world.

Despite its simplicity, only an estimated 5 percent of players are able to identify the right word in one or two guesses. It’s much more common to work out the final word in three guesses, but even so, if you do that you’re above average.

The answer to Wordle #478 is at the bottom of this page, so scroll carefully if you just want a few hints to help you with today’s word but want to avoid a spoiler that would snatch a sense of triumph from your hands.

The first word you put into Wordle’s grid is arguably the most important.

Wardle himself recommends that with your first word you try to eliminate as much of the alphabet as possible in the lowest number of tries, avoiding repeating the same letters. Many agree that the best word is one that uses as many vowels as possible—AUDIO, for example—or includes consonants that are common in everyday speech (not X, Q or Z).

However you approach the game, these hints will help you get the answer in five guesses.

Hint #1: Today’s answer is a very familiar word that starts with ‘E.’

Hint #2: The second letter is a consonant.

Hint #3: There are no repeating letters in today’s word.

Hint #4: The word ends with a ‘Y.’

Hint #5: The word is typically used as a wish.

The answer to Wordle #478 is “ENJOY.” And if you followed our hints and guessed the right word in less than 5 guesses, it’s very likely that you did enjoy today’s Wordle.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “enjoy” as a verb that can be used by itself to mean “to have a good time,” and can also be used with an object to mean “to have for one’s use, benefit, or lot” and “to take pleasure or satisfaction in.”

If you didn’t guess today’s word, do not despair because, after all, tomorrow is another day, as Vivien Leigh would say. Wordle updates every day at 7 p.m. ET.

But if you’re impatient to test your skills sooner than that, you can try a different online brainteaser, such as the geography guessing game Worldle or another word puzzle.
