Benji Marshall the Immortal?

That’s the call from Phil Gould after the South Sydney Rabbitohs veteran wound back the clock, sparking a second-half comeback victory against the Gold Coast Titans.

In a contender of the game of the season, the 36-year old Marshall scored two tries and set up another as the Rabbitohs overturned a 24-6 halftime deficit to run out 40-30 victors in at Cbus Super Stadium.

The veteran playmaker also finished the game with three linebreak assists, filling in at five-eighth after Cody Walker shifted to fullback for the suspended Latrell Mitchell.

Marshall also equalled Adam Blair’s record of most games by a Kiwi-born player in the NRL with 331 – a record he is sure to break next weekend.

His performance inspired the Bunnies into a pointscoring blitz in the final 40 minutes, after superstar back-rower David Fifita opened things up in the first half for the hosts.

Benji’s display prompted plenty of praise on social media, with Gould anointing him an Immortal and plenty of people sticking the boot into the Tigers for letting him go.

Rabbitohs coach Wayne Bennett also praised Marshall for his performance in the post-game press conference.

“I keep reading about clubs that are going to have overhauls of players…here’s a guy that nobody wanted,” he said.

“He has been wonderful for us – we love having him and he loves playing for us. You can’t have a better relationship than that.

“He’s just your average guy, down to earth, knows his game really well. His second-half performance tonight was pretty outstanding.

“He brings a lot of experience and he is in a good team, so that helps him play better as well.

“He was great.”

Marshall will likely stay at five-eighth for the next three weeks as well while Mitchell is suspended and Walker fills in at fullback.
