As the Philadelphia Phillies chase a third World Series title, they’ll have Phillies legend Tug McGraw’s kid cheering them on.
Country music icon Tim McGraw was in attendance Tuesday night at Philly’s Citizens Bank Park for Game 3 of the World Series to show his support for the home team.
In a really special moment for Phillies fans, the jumbotron gave Tim McGraw the spotlight to show him off wearing his dad’s jersey. No doubt, the Philly crowd went wild to have the musician in attendance, celebrating his dad’s former team.
If this doesn’t give you goosebumps, you’re either a reeling Houston Astros fan or you just hate the game of baseball.
Some history: One of the best pitchers ever to play for Philly, Tug McGraw played a critical role in willing the city its first World Series title in 1980 after doing the same for the New York Mets in 1969. For his contributions to the franchise, he’s a member of the Phillies Wall of Fame.
After his death in 2004, Tim McGraw threw out the first pitch and sprinkled some of his dad’s ashes on the pitcher’s mound ahead of Game 3 of the Phillies’ 2008 World Series. The Phillies won the game 5-4 over the Tampa Bay Rays and would wind up winning the series, the franchise’s second.
Tim McGraw attending another game Game 3, this time for the 2022 World Series, brings everything full circle and gives Philly plenty of good vibes going ahead. Funny enough, the Phillies honored Tug McGraw after his passing in 2004 with a shamrock patch on their jerseys, another sign of good luck then and now.
Tug McGraw is no doubt looking down from Heaven, proud of his Phillies’ for their Game 3 offensive avalanche on the Houston Astros. Maybe this goodwill really will carry Philly to its third World Series title.
After all, as Tug used to say, Ya Gotta Believe!
