Riverdale Folk (and Facemask!) Festival : While right now is not the time for giant, established gatherings, but as the old saying goes, “IBM never invented Apple; Apple never invented Facebook; Facebook never invented Instagram, etc.” Point being small acts of innovation now may well be the bedrock of future traditions, and this lineup of local folkies seen from a distance might look back on this COVID thing with a sort of weird nostalgia down the road. Acts in this fenceless jamboree include Bill Bourne, Billie Zizi, Dana Wylie and Kirsten Elliott, Joe Nolan and others — bring your own chairs, your own food, your own rain gear, and sit apart — first come, first seated. Heck, you can even buy an album or two if you’re so inclined. If you’ve got $20 as a donation, it’ll be spread throughout the bands. Love it.

Details : 2 p.m. – 8 p.m. at Riverdale Park (9231 100 Ave.), $20 suggested donation

Re>Set Theatre Fest : Under that very banner, there’s a whole bunch of comedy happening through Aug. 31, presented by Grindstone Theatre. While indoor gatherings are still at 50 people tops, Grindstone and its theatre school under Mill Creek Café are the perfect venues, where masks are mandatory (sorry, no tinfoil hat anti-maskers). Check grindstonetheatre.ca for specific times and venues, but shows include Brittany Campbell, Marv N’ Berry, X, Y, Z, or Whatever on Saturday; yegDND, and Gabbin’ with Gobber on Sunday; Black Laughs Matter and The Debutantes on both nights. Go, theatre!

Details : 7 p.m. – midnight at Grindtsone (10019 81 Ave.) and Sewing Machine Factory (9562 82 Ave.), $13-$17 at the wicket or grindstonetheatre.ca

Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul (2020) : Physical cinema continues: Dawn of the Deep Soul continues the epic adventure of plucky Riko and Reg who are joined by their new friend Nanachi. Together they descend into the Abyss’ treacherous fifth layer, the Sea of Corpses, and encounter the mysterious Bondrewd, a legendary White Whistle whose shadow looms over Nanachi’s troubled past. If I had a nickel every time I heard that …

Details : 7 p.m. Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday at Metro Cinema (8712 109 St.), $13 at the wicket
