This is the most important part of Sixers hiring Morey

Ever since the Bryan Colangelo burner fiasco in 2018, the Sixers have lacked a cohesive vision and lead voice in their front office. Their collaborative approach with Elton Brand, Brett Brown and the leftover remnants of the Colangelo regime proved to be a fruitless endeavor.

There was no accountability, as blame for the team’s frequent disappointments bounced from ownership to Brand to Brown to the little known Colangelo-era executives. In any stable organization, there is a clear power structure, there is transparency, there is an ideal that everyone strives for. Colangelo was the last true top decision-maker the franchise had, but some Sixers fans would certainly argue that they haven’t had trust in the front office since Sam Hinkie’s days in charge.

That ends today, as Daryl Morey is expected to join the Sixers as their new president of basketball operations. NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark was all over the news. 

Morey was on the forefront of the analytics movement during his decade-plus as the general manager of the Houston Rockets. He took them from a middling team to a franchise with major star power without even needing to tank through a series of shrewd trades and free agent signings.

From the blunders of letting Jimmy Butler go to the disastrous Al Horford signing and every terrible decision in between, Sixers fans have had zero reason to have any confidence in this franchise. They were a rudderless ship, directionless and without an ounce of stability. Morey is just that.

With one of the greatest basketball minds in the NBA aboard, fans can breathe a sigh of relief for the first time in who knows how long. Morey is the model of how a basketball team’s front office should be run, a visionary with direct goals and a plan to bring a championship to Philadelphia.

The Sixers were teetering towards becoming a laughingstock in the league with how poorly run the team seemed to be from the outside with its oft-criticized owners and an overmatched Elton Brand to blame. With a single tweet from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Sixers’ fate flipped in an instant.

Pessimism has turned to optimism solely with the Morey hire. Have a day, Sixers fans. You’ve more than earned it.
