FOOTBALL fans have joked that Geronimo Rulli’s awful display against Liverpool was payback for Manchester City selling him.

The goalkeeper, 29, committed three howlers for three Reds goals in Villarreal’s Champions League exit on Tuesday.

The Spaniards, who lost the first leg 2-0, had the semi-final tie levelled at 2-2 going into the break.

However, Liverpool soon went ahead again when Fabinho’s shot went through Rulli’s open legs.

The Argentina international was then unable to palm away a Luis Diaz header as Liverpool restored their two-goal lead.

And the Reds sealed a 5-2 aggregate victory when Rulli was caught out by Sadio Mane, who jinxed around the stopper before hitting the back of the net.

Incredibly, Rulli has committed FIVE errors leading to an opposition goal this season – the most across Europe’s top five leagues plus the Champions League and Europa League.

But few people know that Rulli was once on the books of Man City.

He joined in 2016 for £4million from Deportivo Maldonado and was immediately loaned to Real Sociedad, where he had already spent two years temporarily.

But City allowed Sociedad to finally make Rulli’s stay permanent just six months later, bringing his Etihad career to an abrupt end.

Pep Guardiola’s men are currently battling Real Madrid for a place in the final against Liverpool.

And some footy fans jokingly reckon Rulli purposefully put in a shocker so City, provided they make the final, would end up playing a tougher opponent in Liverpool than Villarreal.

One laughed: “Geronimo Rulli must have hated his time at City.”

Another said: “Rulli must be fuming he never got his chance at City. This is how he executes his revenge.”

One joked: “No way Rulli backstabbed the entire city of Villarreal like that.”

Another noted: “How did Rulli put down a masterclass to stop Man Utd but played like an outfield player against Liverpool?”

One giggled: “Rulli’s got to be strapped to the front of the team coach and tomatoed by the whole city, this is an all time hall of shame performance.”

Another added: “I think this explains why City bought Rulli and sold him within an hour.

“He probably dropped the glass of champagne after signing.”

One quipped: “Is this Rulli’s way of getting back at Man City for buying him and never using him?”
