Juneteenth #Juneteenth

Some city services and offices will be closed Monday, June 20, in observation of Juneteenth, which lands on a Sunday this year. See the list below to see what’s closed for the holiday.

Juneteenth marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, or the day in which federal troops arrived in Galveston Bay to take control of the state and declared that more than 250,000 Texas slaves. Despite the Civil War ending April 9 of the same year, emancipation took longer to reach Texas.

While this will be the first year that Juneteenth is observed as a national holiday around the United States, it has been officially recognized in Texas since 1979. The City of San Antonio observed Juneteenth as a city holiday for the first time last year after Mayor Ron Nirenberg made an official proclamation at the inaugural Juneteenth San Antonio event.

The second annual Juneteenth San Antonio starts Friday with a number of events happening through the weekend in the city and the Hill Country.
