Meghan McCain’s last week on “The View” is off to a rocky start.
After appearing at the top of Monday’s episode, McCain was noticeably absent when former President Donald Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, appeared on the daytime talk show to promote her latest book, “The Reckoning: Our Nation’s Trauma and Finding a Way to Heal” (out Aug. 17).

Mary Trump publicly made note. “It’s a shame that your colleague didn’t have the courage to come on and have this conversation with me,” she said to co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sara Haines and Sunny Hostin.

The psychologist and author is an outspoken critic of Trump, much like McCain. But the daughter of former Arizona Senator John McCain said Monday “there is no ‘good’ Trump family member to me.”
“Continue to wish they would all just leave me and my entire family the (expletive) alone,” McCain, the show’s lone conservative panelist, wrote on Twitter.

McCain’s disappearance may have something to do with Mary Trump’s previous appearance on the talk show.
McCain and Mary Trump first clashed on “The View” during the author’s visit in July 2020 to promote her best-selling, tell-all book, “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man,” when McCain accused her of “cashing in” on her family’s name.
“At the end of the day, you get a really great paycheck out of it, but I don’t think it’s that legitimate,” McCain told Mary Trump last year. “What do you say to people like me who think this is just a great way for you to get a paycheck right now?”
Mary Trump replied, “Well, you’re entirely entitled to your opinion,” but the psychologist explained that she brings her “very deep experience within the family” to the book.
When McCain referred to her as “extended family” who couldn’t possibly know the “inner workings” of the Trumps, Mary Trump pushed back: “I’m not some stranger writing it. I’m his niece.”

On Monday, Mary Trump returned to “The View” to discuss her second book, “The Reckoning.” She said she believes her uncle is responsible for the “unnecessary deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans” under his administration.
“It’s a travesty. This person should be held accountable,” she said, noting Trump’s failure to back the COVID-19 vaccine. “We have a terrible time in this country holding powerful white men accountable for anything… It’s something we really need to change.”
When asked about a possible Trump run in 2024, Mary Trump said: “One thing Donald proved is that using racism as a platform was successful, and I think that’s why we see so much strife in this country.”

Mary Trump thanked the co-hosts in attendance for being “willing to take up these very difficult subjects because racism in my view is at the heart of everything that’s wrong in 21st century America.” In regards to McCain, Mary Trump said she didn’t have the “courage” to face her.
Following the interview, McCain told Fox News she didn’t join the segment because Mary Trump is “too irrelevant for my time.”
Last month, McCain announced her departure from “The View” after four years, citing the pandemic “dramatically” changed the way she wants to live her life.
McCain’s last day on “The View” is Aug.6.
