UPDATED: Following The Society’s surprise cancellation Friday, star Kathryn Newton posted a photo of her castmates with the caption “I Am Proud #TheSociety”, on Twitter Friday. (You can see it below.)

Newton later went live on Instagram, joined by co-star Gideon Adlon, to directly address the show’s fans.

“I’m heartbroken, so heartbroken,” Newton said in the video. (You can watch it below)

Added Adlon, “It’s definitely a bit of a gut-punch… “It’s a big bummer. But this is the way things work sometimes. We have no control over it.”

Newton noted that “we all really wanted to go back” into production on Season 2 amid the pandemic. “Everything was written. I can’t even believe it,” she added, a reference to the completed scripts for the previously greenlighted second season.

The Society had been eying a production start date next month, something Adlon alluded to.

“We’ve all actually been waiting to go back,” she said. “We thought we were going back pretty soon, actually.”

She addressed the show’s Season 1 finale, which will now serve as a series finale.

“I’m sorry we left it on such a cliffhanger; we didn’t want that,” she said.

Added Newton, “I’m so sad. I loved The Society so much.”

As we reported earlier today, Netflix reversed its Season 2 renewal decision for the YA drama, whose production was impacted by COVID-19.

Newton starred as Abbie Pressman on the series, along with Gideon Adlon, Sean Berdy, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Jacques Colimon, Olivia DeJonge, Alex Fitzalan, Grace Victoria Cox, Emilio Garcia Sanchez and Olivia Nikkanen.

Created by Chris Keyser and starring Newton, The Society is described as a modern take on Lord of the Flies. It follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a facsimile of their wealthy New England town without any trace of their parents. Their newfound freedom will be fun… but it will also be very dangerous. As they struggle to figure out what has happened to them and how to get home, they must establish order and form alliances if they want to survive.

Netflix also opted not to proceed with a second season of another coming-of-age series, I Am Not Okay With This.
