The places in Yorkshire where dozens of homeless people tragically died last year

The Yorkshire Museum #TheYorkshireMuseum

Last year, 41 homeless people living across Yorkshire lost their lives.

Sadly, very little is known about these people – just that they were sleeping rough, either out on the streets or ‘sofa surfing’, with no place to call their own.

The average age of those homeless people who died in Yorkshire last year was 39, but, disturbingly, some of them were just teenagers. The youngest was only 16.

This data has been collated by the Museum of Homelessness as part of their Dying Homeless memorial, which has been set up to honour and remember those who lost their lives while homeless.

Since the count began, in 2017, the Museum of Homelessness has recorded a staggering 2,466 deaths among the homeless population in the UK, with the year 2020 seeing a shocking rise in deaths.

The Museum of Homelessness’ research into homeless deaths during the Covid-19 pandemic shows that there has been a 37 percent increase in deaths when compared to pre-pandemic figures.

Though emergency housing helped to prevent some deaths in 2020, Jess Turtle, co-founder of the Museum of Homelessness said that this is “no substitute” for a safe home.

She said: “A hotel or hostel room is no substitute for a safe home. The government touts ‘Everyone In’ as a runaway success. But it didn’t stop a staggering increase in the number of people dying while homeless– despite the best efforts of our colleagues around the country who worked 24 hours a day on emergency response.

“These heart-breaking findings demonstrate how the pandemic hit a system already cut to the bone from 10 years of austerity and the scale of the challenge we face to recover. The government needs to stop repackaging old funding commitments as new support and do more to stop this terrible loss of life.”

Below are the areas of Yorkshire with recorded homeless deaths last year.
