The NCAA’s decision to declare NC State vs. Vanderbilt no contest, explained

The Men’s College World Series just took a pretty wild turn.

On Friday, NC State played a game against Vanderbilt with a completely depleted roster. They fielded just 13 players total — nine position players and four pitchers— in a 3-1 loss.

That sounds pretty rough, right? But a few hours later, things got worse. The Wolfpack found out their season was over.

On Saturday morning the NCAA Division I baseball committee declared the next game no contest. NC State was disqualified due to COVID-19 protocols and Vanderbilt moved on to the College World Series Finals.

Just like that, their season was done. It was over. And it all happened so fast. Here’s why it happened.
