Warning: spoilers ahead for The Mandalorian season 3 episode 3.

The latest instalment of The Mandalorian goes in an unexpected direction, after Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) jet away from their dangerous quest on Mandalore.

The Star Wars series on Disney Plus is nothing if not spectacular, and that’s clearly seen as viewers are transported to the wondrous metropolis of Coruscant, where former Imperial scientist Doctor Pershing (Omid Abtahi) is now living in an amnesty programme, having switched alliances to the New Republic.

Meanwhile, after Din and Bo-Katan meet up with the members of Mando’s creed, the Children of the Watch, a revelation is made about their helmets which has left some fans of the TV show devastated.

Here’s what happened in the new episode and what it could mean.

When Bo-Katan dove into the Living Waters in the mines of Mandalore in episode two to save Din, who’d sunk to the bottom of the water, she saw a living creature which had to unmistakeably be a legendary mythosaur.

Considering how cynical Bo-Katan has been about the old, ancient ways of the creed, seeing the being – which was believed to be extinct – with her own eyes must have left her quaking in her boots just a little bit.

When Din wakes from his state of unconsciousness in episode three, Bo-Katan asks if he saw anything alive under the water… and when he says that he didn’t, she fails to tell him what’s lurking beneath the surface.

The Armorer (Emily Swallow) once said: ‘The songs of eons past foretold of the mythosaur rising up to herald a new age of Mandalore,’ so perhaps Bo-Katan is aware of what the existence of the creature could mean, both for Mandalore and for its possible future ruler, Din.

Doctor Pershing was first introduced in season one of The Mandalorian, while working with the Imperial remnant trying to get their hands on The Child.

It’s clear that he’s conflicted by his immoral line of work, despite helping to capture Grogu and working for Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), and now he’s living in an amnesty programme being run by the New Republic in the buzzing city of Coruscant.

While Doctor Pershing feels grateful to be welcomed into the society, he feels increasingly frustrated that he can’t continue with his past research on cloning, as exploration of the field is not allowed by the New Republic.

Elia Kane (Katy O’Brian) – a former Imperial communications officer who Doctor Pershing previously encountered working for Gideon – crosses paths with him in the amnesty accommodation and convinces him to pursue his research, as while it’s not permitted, he believes strongly that it could be of use to the New Republic.

Surprise surprise – the doctor is betrayed by Imperial loyalist

Who else was banking on Kane secretly still being evil?

Of course, it came as no surprise when she betrayed Doctor Pershing, leading him to an old Imperial ship so that he could retrieve equipment needed to create a lab for his research.

Doctor Pershing is captured by the New Republic, and while he insists that he was set up in a trap by Kane, his captors place him in a so-called ‘mind flayer’ to provide him with ‘release’ from his stress.

Kane watches on menacingly, munching on old Imperial biscuits to demonstrate where her loyalties truly lie as she turns up the intensity of the machine, with presumably dire consequences for Doctor Pershing’s state of mind.

Having bathed in the Living Waters of the mines of Mandalore, Din reunites with his creed, with Bo-Katan in tow, after she saw her castle being bombed by enemies.

Din reveals that he has been redeemed, as per the Armorer’s conditions, presenting her with proof after scooping up some of the water in a tube.

The Armorer informs Mando that he has indeed been redeemed for previously removing his helmet… but in a surprise twist, so has Bo-Katan, as she not only bathed in the Living Waters by diving in to save Din, but she also hasn’t removed her helmet since.

At the revelation that this could mean Din and Bo-Katan may never remove their helmets ever again, several fans were understandably distraught at the thought of not seeing Pedro and Katee’s faces on screen in future episodes of the series.

‘Bo was supposed to influence Din and make him feel more comfortable removing his helmet sometimes but instead Din influenced Bo and now she doesn’t want to remove her helmet anymore PAIN,’ one person tweeted.

‘Bo, you were the chosen one! You were supposed to get Din (also Pedro) to take his helmet off, not join him!!!!’ another said.

Someone else wrote: ‘If Bo keeps her helmet on all season I swear to god.’

Considering the episode is literally called ‘The Convert’, could this signify Bo-Katan converting to the religious ways of the Children of the Watch?

Or maybe there’s still time for Din to renounce the old ways and herald in a new age of Mandalore, where wearing a helmet isn’t the be all and end all?

The Mandalorian is available to watch on Disney Plus, with new episodes released on Wednesdays.
