The makeover – Hronek’s departure followed by Bertuzzi

Quick update – if I heard Lalonde correctly, Erne is coming up and Vrana may not be playing. I don’t want to go on a rant, just not sure that’s the best possible decision.

Larkin’s extension almost seemed to be the impetus for the departure of Hronek and Bertuzzi. The first domino fell and now the team has opened up spots on defense and wing. It definitely took a toll on the captain as he barely held it together at the press conference.

Getting 2 first round picks, a 2nd and a 4th is a decent haul, to be sure. Not comparing the players at all, but the last time I remember seeing tears after a trade was Gretzky. Although, when Phil Esposito was traded Bobby Orr swears that the entire locker room was in tears. There’s a human element that often gets overlooked. With his contract status, Tyler has a lot on his plate and the team will move forward.

To Holland’s credit, Hronek and Bert were 2 of the good holdovers. Veleno is finally finding his spot, Zadina has shown some glimpses, Berggren has had some good runs. Lindstrom feels a bit like a Lashoff type in where he will slot in with the organization. 7th D or Grand Rapids may be his destiny.

In trying to be an optimist, perhaps the Vrana situation has seen some repair. Bertuzzi has a chance to play with an exceptional team. I’ve long said that Bergeron is my favorite center for most of his career. I also think that Bertuzzi could find more success in a lower spot right now.

The only think I hate about this time of year is the personal side. It’s amazing how families/significant others, can box up their lives and get relocated. My wife and I knew one family that followed a player to 5 different cities. They pushed hard to stay together.

I can assure you that a video montage will find its way into Bertuzzi’s return to Detroit. For now, the team is younger and looking forward. I would expect some ELCs to be discussed now more than ever and there is a room full of players that know they have to continue to earn a spot.

Watching Dylan have to do this is painful. In a world where human beings seem to care less each day, some friendships truly make it through. Bert is ready to be more of a depth player (my opinion) and Larkin needs to be on a line with higher skill on both sides of him.
