The bizarre oddities of Rangers’ Danilo and Dessers | OneFootball
Dessers #Dessers
As we alluded to earlier, there are so many subplots in the Danilo signing from Feyenoord that we decided to dedicate an entire curious entry to the whole affair.
As you will all know now, Rangers finally got our man in the form of the Brazilian striker at a reported £6M with a whopping £40,000pw wage. Michael Beale has disputed both these numbers but if the man said it was raining most Rangers fans would still stick our hand out the window!
But this is getting away from the curiosities of Cyriel Dessers and now Danilo.
The first big thing to look at is indeed the numbers; Dessers was an initial £4.5M rising to £6M give or take, and Danilo is pretty much the same amount of half a dozen.

In short, Rangers have paid £12M for two players, marking the first time this has happened since the Dick Advocaat days. Ridvan last summer was an eventual £6M as well, but in this window Rangers have done it twice. Not even Walter Smith’s second spell saw any players signed for these numbers, but of course, inflation means prices are higher now than they were.
The next oddity is a remarkable one – not only did Danilo join from Feyenoord for £6M, but he follows Cyriel Dessers in two staggering and slightly bizarre omens.
First of all, Dessers was Danilo’s PREDECESSOR at Feyenoord – when the Nigerian left the De Kuip in Rotterdam for his new life in Italy’s Serie A with Cremonese, Feyenoord replaced him with… Danilo!
Meaning, of course, Rangers have spent £12M signing Feyenoord’s last two strikers, in a row. This is a truly bizarre and surreal state of affairs.
And then, last but not least is the rather strange reality that these two strikers have been signed, with all those echoes, with a view to playing together in a pairing.
There is no chance Michael Beale, who has scouted and approved all these signings himself, has signed ANYONE this window outwith of Sterling and possibly Dowell, as anything other than a first-team starter.
He has added what he considers premium players and they are HIS team, his Rangers team.
Meaning neither Dessers nor Danilo will be benched, ditto Sam Lammers. All three will play and that will be Rangers’ main attacking trident. You don’t spend £14.5M on players you intend to have on the sidelines.
Now, the one catch here is Abdallah Sima – he’s not hit the ground running at all and hasn’t impressed anyone – as a loan player, he may well find himself on the bench a lot, because at the moment he’s not measuring up. As Barry put it, he needs to hit the ground running yesterday.
But the rest, all the Butlands, Baloguns, Dessers, Danilos, Lammers? These guys are starting if fit, yes, including Balogun, more often than not.
But this is a little away from the point.
Beale has added Danilo, and there’s a lot of subplots to that addition. It’s a very interesting path Beale is taking, essentially signing Championship-winning Feyenoord strikers.
Let’s see where that path leads us.
