What is Black Friday?

Black Friday, which falls the day after American Thanksgiving, is a shopping event in which retailers nationwide run blowout deals and sales on a large portion of their merchandise. Originally, it was marked as the official start to the holiday shopping season, although the event renamed nameless for a while.

The term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1950s, and since then, it’s been joined by other shopping holidays like Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, making this week more of an extended sale event.

Officially, Black Friday 2020 is on Friday, November 27. But the best Black Friday sales will be available far longer than a single day. Last year the earliest Black Friday sales started around November 1 and the latest Black Friday sales ended in early December.

On average, consumers save 37% on Black Friday deals and the average adult spends around $400 on Black Friday sales.

How much did total consumers spend on Black Friday 2019? 

Last year, Black Friday brought in a whopping $7.4 billion in sales. In 2019, 40% of shoppers did their Black Friday shopping online, but this year, 60% to 82% of adults plan to do more than half of their holiday shopping digitally.
