Andros Towsend has defended the expectations of Newcastle United fans and believes the Magpies should be striving to compete in the top-half of the Premier League.

The former England international made an immediate impact during his brief stint at St James’ Park after signing in January 2016.

Townsend quickly endeared himself to the Toon Army after netting four times in Rafa Benitez’s doomed effort to save Newcastle from relegation.

Benitez was keen to keep the winger on Tyneside as part of his rebuild, but the ex-Tottenham star opted to remain in the top-flight and secured a return to the capital with Crystal Palace.

Townsend remains popular among Magpies supporters for his efforts despite this exit, with talk of a possible return with his contract at Selhurst Park expiring this month.

The 29-year-old has also become a regular guest on talkSPORT, and was discussing his former side with hosts Simon Jordan and Jim White on Friday.

When asked about Newcastle supporters, Townsend replied: “The fans, their expectation…I wouldn’t say they expect more than what they have because that’s the job of the fan, you want your team to do better.

“It’s the right of the fans to expect and players are the same. Those Newcastle players will be thinking we’re better than 13th [12th], we should be aiming 10th, 9th, 8th, 7th.”

Jordan then asked if Townsend had ever met unpopular Toon owner Mike Ashley during his brief stay, explaining he was trying to get a glimpse behind the “Keyser Soze” persona the Frasers Group magnate has developed in the media.

The soon-to-be free agent admits he never met the wantaway owner, but stressed how much he enjoyed his time in the North East.

Townsend added: “Newcastle is a massive, massive club and I loved my time at Newcastle.

“Hopefully they do get back to where they belong which I think is definitely in the top-half of the Premier League.”
